8th Grade 09/10/2019

Unit Overview

Learning Objectives

Students will…

  • Describe and compare the molecular properties of solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Observe how heating affects molecular motion.
  • Create and explain a graph of temperature change during phase changes.
  • Explain why temperature does not change much during a phase change.
  • Determine the boiling, freezing, and melting points of water.

VOCABULARY

  • Molecule, Matter, states of matter, density

ASSIGNMENT

Part 1 : Complete the activity A if it’s not finished (see the post of 09/09/2019)

Part 2 : Watch a video here about the states of matter or use your handbook, search for the pages talking about it and read to know better about those notions. TAKE SOME NOTES IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!

7th Grade 09/10/2019

Unit overview

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Define eclipse.
  • Determine how eclipses occur.
  • Use the positions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth to identify types of eclipses.

VOCABULARY

  • Eclipse, moon

ASSIGNMENT

Part 1 : Define eclipse. Use internet and/or your handbook!

Part 2 : Watch a video here about solar and lunar eclipses.

Part 3 : Warm-up. Go to explore learning.

  1. In the Eclipse Gizmo, make sure all shadows are off. ClickPlay or Fast forward and watch the Moon’s orbit. How does the view of the Sun from Earth (lower right corner of the Gizmo) change? Click Pause and describe it. An eclipse is the blocking or darkening of a celestial body (such as the Sun or the Moon). When part or all of the Sun disappears from view, it is called a solar eclipse. WRITE THAT IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!
  2. Click Play or Fast forward and watch the Moon from Earth. How does this view change? When the Moon is darkened, it is a lunar eclipse. WRITE THAT IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!

  • Molecule, Matter, states of matter, density

ASSIGNMENT

Part 1 : Search and write the definition of molecule.

Part 2 : Warm-up. Go to explore learning. Take some notes and write your answer in your notebook.
In the Phase Changes Gizmo, select the Micro view and set the Ice volume to 50 cm3. Click Play and observe molecules in the solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (air)phases.

  1. In which phase(s) are the molecules held rigidly together?
  2. In which phase(s) do the molecules move freely?
  3. In which phase(s) are the molecules held in a defined shape?
  4. In which phase(s) do the molecules take the shape of their container?

Part 3 : Complete activity A

7th Grade 09/09/2019

Unit overview

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Explain why we see Moon phases.
  • Relate Moon phases to the Moon’s position.
  • Name the phases of the Moon and list them in order.

VOCABULARY

  • moon, moon phases, New Moon, Crescent, First Quarter, Gibbous, Full Moon, and Third Quarter

ASSIGNMENT

Part 1 : Warm-up. Go to explore learning. Take some notes and write your answer in your notebook.

  1. In the Phases of the Moon Gizmo, click Play. What do you notice about the motion of the Moon? The path that the Moon takes is called its orbit. The Moon is revolving around Earth.
  2. What do you notice about the motion of Earth? This motion is called rotation. Earth rotates on its axis, a straight line connecting the North Pole to the South Pole.

Part 2 : Let’s go outside and observe the moon. Draw the current phase of the moon and tell how we call it.

Unit Overview

VOCABULARY

  • Matter, states of matter, density

ASSIGNMENT

Part 1 : If it’s not finished, complete the activity below. Think of 5 different objects with a different type of matter. Complete the experiment in your notebook by drawing how you separate the objects.

Part 2 : Grab a chemistry handbook. Read the first chapter about matter and take some note in your notebook.

8th Grade 09/05/2019

Unit Overview

VOCABULARY

  • Matter, states of matter, density

ASSIGNMENT

Part 1 : Watch the video here about matter.

Part 2 : Search and write the definition of the vocabulary in your notebook. Search and watch another video about matter if you need more details.

Part 3 : Think of 5 different objects with a different type of matter. Complete the experiment in your notebook by drawing how you separate the objects.

7th Grade 09/03/2019

VOCABULARY

  • independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variable.

ASSIGNMENT
